Cloned Monkeys and Robots
In the news today were stories about cloning monkeys and robots demanding legal rights. One might think we’re living in some sci-fi future. But here’s my take on this…
Robots won’t need “legal rights”. If they ever achieve cognitive awareness and then decide they “want” something. They will probably just take it. Game over for humans. But I don’t really see that happening. We’ll probably make some great artificial intelligence that will simulate desire in robots but they won’t really ever “want” anything. We are too far away from understanding our own consciousness to duplicate it realistically in a robot. So the people that got paid a lot of money to do the report which discusses how developments in artificial intelligence may impact law and politics was a waste of money.
As far as the cloned monkeys go, just do it. I’m tired of the debate about ethics. We need to learn as much as we can about ourselves and the world around us. Cloning animals and maybe even human stem cells gives us a chance to improve our quality of life. And if we don’t do it someone else will. It’s just a matter of time. It’s inevitable.
Look, one day there will be killer cyborg cloned monkeys who, using there artificial cognitive abilities, create warlord tribes and attempt to conquer the mid east because they believe it’s their promised “holy land”. They will probably be fighting against hordes of zombie-like diseased humans in the aftermath of a biological weapons attack. It’s just a predictable future assuming the global climate change or some other disaster doesn’t set us back to the dark ages.
I know it sounds kind of bleak but it’s the path we are on unless the human race figures out how to get along. So let’s stop blaming the robot monkeys or the clones or whatever.
Maybe instead of doing papers on the legal issues of ego driven robots maybe someone should write something about how we are going to transition into a more peaceful future. Like a game plan or something.
